THE Screech-In

The Screech-In is an initiation of sorts. We Newfoundlanders are known the world over for our hospitality and the Screech-In is our way of welcoming you to our unique corner of Canada.

As the first established colony in North America, Newfoundland & Labrador is steeped in history. From the beginning, our currency was salt codfish which was traded for all other staples, including strong 140-proof rum from Jamaica. As legend has it, an American serviceman stationed in Newfoundland during the Second World War downed some of this rum one night and let out a ‘blood-curdling howl’. Someone nearby asked what that awful yell was and a Newfoundlander sitting at the bar said, “The Screech? ‘Tis the rum, me son.” And that’s how Screech earned its name.

The ceremony involves a shot of Screech rum, flambé bologna, a close encounter with a codfish, a personalized certificate, photo opportunity with Skipper Lukey and a whole lot of fun!
